An Artistic Adventure at Sculpture on the Edge
This spring, trade the beach for rolling hills and swap the sound of waves for a symphony of creativity. Just an hour from Noosa, Sculpture on the Edge invites you into a world where imagination blooms – and Ida Fink Gundtoft is buzzing with excitement.
If you’re dreaming of a day trip that stirs your senses, sparks your imagination and leaves you with a palette of inspiration, Sculpture on the Edge is where you should be this spring. Nestled in the lush beauty of Flaxton Gardens, this celebrated Sunshine Coast Hinterland event returns for its 16th year from 29 November to 7 December, offering nine days of art, nature and a little bit of magic.
Just under an hour’s drive from Noosa, the journey itself sets the scene. Winding roads thread through the rolling hills of the hinterland, transporting you to another world. And what better time to be driving through the Blackall Range than spring, where vibrant jacaranda trees burst into bloom and abundant green pastures create a landscape almost too picturesque to be real.
Start your art adventure ‘on the edge’ enjoying expansive ocean views at Flaxton Gardens. Enjoy breakfast from 8am with a fresh coffee, morning tea or lunch in the sunlit garden setting inviting you to pause, sip and savour before you enter a world of whimsy where art and nature collide.
Over 70 sculptors from across Australia converge in this lush backdrop, filling both indoor galleries and outdoor gardens with sculptural creations that challenge the eye and invite playful curiosity. Round a bend, and a gleaming metal figure might emerge, like a modern phoenix rising from the rich Queensland soil; follow a winding trail to find wooden forms that mirror the gentle curves of the surrounding hill; step to the garden’s edge and delight in creations that dance with the breeze.
This is a space meant not just to be viewed, but to be experienced, each sculpture harmonising with the serenity, movement and vibrant spirit of the Hinterland. Whether you are a seasoned collector, a curious first-timer or simply someone hungry for inspiration, Sculpture on the Edge promises a feast for the senses.
And the best part? Every piece on display is available for purchase, offering the chance to take a piece of this creative world home with you. Or be part of history and vote for your favourite piece in the People’s Choice category.
Flaxton Gardens itself is a sanctuary of tranquillity, where each sculpture finds a natural partner in the surrounding flora. Take your time to wander the outdoor spaces, peek into the indoor galleries and allow the textures, colours and forms to captivate you. The rhythm of the day – strolling, pausing, admiring and perhaps snapping a few photos – feels almost meditative.
With gates opening at 8am and closing at 3pm, there’s ample time to explore. Adult admission ticket holders also receive a catalogue of the event, a perfect keepsake and guide to the artists and their work.
Why not make an adventure of it and explore the hinterland towns of Maleny, Montville and Mapleton? Enjoy a spot of shopping, partake in a bushwalk or settle into country hospitality for a few nights. A trip to the Sunshine Coast hinterland isn’t complete without stopping for lunch or dinner at Mapleton Public House – the culinary gem on everyone’s lips – led by Executive Chef and Partner, Cameron Matthews.
Perched atop the ranges with sweeping views from its breezy deck, this historic spot delivers an immersive farm-to-table experience that celebrates hyper-local produce – much of it grown just steps away at The Falls Farm.
Every creative, seasonal dish bursts with freshness and flavour, but a visit here offers more than a meal – it’s a celebration of local food, sustainable farming and community spirit, making it a must-do part of your Sculpture on the Edge adventure. With a relaxed, welcoming vibe and regular intimate live gigs (follow them at @mapleton.pub for details), it’s the perfect pitstop. Bookings recommended!
Sculpture on the Edge isn’t just an exhibition, it’s an experience. One that stays with you long after the day has ended, tucked away like a treasured memory of colour, creativity and the endless charm of the Sunshine Coast.
So pack your camera, your appetite and a sense of wonder and live on the edge! Take the short trip from Noosa, breathe in the hinterland air and discover a day of art, inspiration and indulgence!
