Brisbane Bliss: An Urban Adventure

Our family loves the Sunshine Coast’s serene beaches and laid-back lifestyle. But, Brisbane’s vibrant energy and culture allow us to enter another world. Words by John Caruso.

My wife Deb and I have a deep connection to Brisbane. She grew up there, we’ve both worked there and it’s where our son, Maximus, was born in 2009. The city holds a special place in our hearts, and it’s always a joy to return, especially now that Max is at an age where he truly appreciates the urban buzz of his hometown. He loves nothing more than wandering the city streets, exploring the shops – particularly those selling the latest gear with the iconic tick. His enthusiasm is infectious, and it reminds us of our own youthful adventures, not to mention providing the opportunity for family bonding and building core memories.

Any excuse to head to ‘the big smoke’ is good for us and the return of the internationally-acclaimed Cirque du Soleil under the iconic Big Top next to the Royal Queensland Golf Club is as good as any. The latest offering from this global troupe of circus superstars is LUZIA which will arrive in Brisbane from 25 September until mid-November.

This spectacular show will transport audiences to a surreal and imaginary Mexico, blending traditional and contemporary elements in a dazzling display of breathtaking acrobatics and striking artistry. It’s the perfect family outing, offering wonder, thrills and excitement to deliver unforgettable experiences for both first-time and seasoned Cirque du Soleil devotees with its jaw-dropping magic and playfulness – it’s a bucket-list item!

It seems crazy to endure the Bruce Highway twice in one day so we always make the most of it by soaking in all the city vibes that we can over a few days. When it comes to accommodation, Rydges South Bank is our go-to choice. We’ve stayed here before and each visit has been a delightful experience. The hotel’s prime location in the heart of the South Bank arts and entertainment precinct makes it an ideal base for our urban adventures.

The rooms are ultra-modern and comfortable, offering stunning views of the Brisbane River, Mount Coot-tha, or bustling West End while the gym, sauna, and pool with Soleil Pool Bar overlooking the bright lights of the big city make it hard to leave the hotel. Guests rave about the friendly and attentive service and we couldn’t agree more. The staff go out of their way to make you feel at home, whether it’s assisting with laundry, arranging car rentals, or simply offering a warm greeting as you pass through the lobby.

Dining is another highlight of our Brisbane getaways, and Bacchus Restaurant is a firm favourite. Located within Rydges South Bank, Bacchus offers a dining experience that is both sophisticated and welcoming. The first time we dined there with Max, he was a bit younger but impressed us – and the waitstaff – with his level of sophistication, adventurous palate and appreciation for superb food. He ordered the kangaroo, a dish that showcased his growing appreciation for fine cuisine and that tale (tail?!) has been recounted many times. The restaurant’s commitment to quality ingredients and innovative dishes makes every meal a memorable occasion and that kind of shared family experience is priceless.

Just a short stroll from Rydges is Fish Lane with edgy street art and a smorgasbord of options from casual to high-end cuisine. On Deb’s ‘must-do’ list is always a meal at La Lune Wine Co where she can catch up with her old mate, owner and head chef Paul McGivern, who always has amazing food and exceptional wine waiting for us. But, for us Italian boys, a feed of pasta at Spaghetti House is always on the cards (did I mention Brisbane is always a ‘cheat day’ for the no-carbs diet?).

Walking off the indulgences is a leisurely loop from South Bank across the Victoria Bridge taking in the stunning views of the city and the Brisbane River and hitting the Queen Street Mall for a spot of shopping, before we cross back via the Kurilpa Bridge. This invariably leads us to Brisbane’s cultural precinct including Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Queensland Museum, State Library and Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) where there is always a show to catch!

We need more than two days for sure! There’s still the former home of World Expo ‘88, South Bank, with its plethora of dining options, walking tracks, the Maritime Museum and the Brisbane Wheel to check out.

For Sunshine Coast families considering a getaway, Brisbane offers a perfect blend of cultural enrichment, urban excitement, and culinary delights. Whether it’s shopping in the city, exploring the latest exhibitions and shows, enjoying the luxurious comforts of Rydges South Bank, savouring a gourmet meal at Bacchus, cocktails at Soleil Pool Bar, a walk along the Brisbane River or being mesmerised by Cirque du Soleil, there’s something for everyone.

Our family’s urban escapes to Brisbane are always filled with discovery and joy, and we invite you to experience the same. Embrace the city’s energy, indulge in its offerings, and create your own cherished memories. A change of scenery, even for a night or two, is the perfect way to recharge, reconnect and building family memories.

Why not plan your own city escape? Stay at Rydges South Bank, dine at Bacchus, explore the South Bank precinct, and be dazzled by LUZIA!

Brisbane awaits with open arms, ready to offer you an unforgettable and memorable experience. Get amongst it!
