Eco-conscious Luxury Afloat on Stillwater
Raising the bar to accessible, eco-luxury cruising on the Noosa River, HV Stillwater has been a labour of love for David Stielow, enthuses Helen Flanagan.
The proverb ‘still waters run deep’ immediately springs to mind and seems appropriate. It compares aspects of the human character to hydro-dynamics – that’s quiet people hidden behind a clever persona, such is the Noosa Ferry and Cruise Co’s owner David Stielow.
“Welcoming HV Stillwater to the fleet represents a new chapter, a truly special experience on the Noosa River,” he says. “Its advanced hybrid-electric propulsion system creates a peaceful and eco-conscious cruising experience that supports the Noosa Biosphere’s strong environmental values.”
Local Noosa Marine builder Julian Griffiths’ vast experience helped the planets align; the inclusion aspect evolved as the state government’s Accessible Tourism Elevate Fund enabled accommodation for twelve wheel chairs, and the environmental aspect of being a hybrid vessel was a combination of care for the environment whilst pioneering changes for the future.
“The inclusion of electrical propulsion certainly posed challenges within the legislative approvals required, but we persisted and finally obtained approval from AMSA for a Class 1 commercially registered vessel,” David said. “I am confident we are one of the first vessels in the country to be a fully hybrid vessel with 8kW of solar power and no need to plug in, unless it’s raining of course!”
On board, there is a boutique ambiance with customised finishes, super comfy lounge seating and naturally wide open or shut panes to optimise the never-ending beauty of the surrounds.
“From dream to reality, building something unique which elevates the marine experience, took the best part of 18 months,” David shares. “Needless to say, the support of my wife Sarah, along with business partner Phil Bradford and his wife Sarah, have been invaluable bringing the project to fruition.
“I met Phil when we worked for Hamilton Island Enterprises and lived together – pre wives and kids, remaining close mates for over 25 years,” recalls David who has had a rewarding career thus far, first with his late father in seaplanes, then boating on the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays, based on Hamilton Island where he had a very successful sailing boat business cruising the islands for over 15 years.
Following up on Phil Bradford’s initial instigation, David and Sarah moved to Noosa in 2019, having finally convinced Don McBryde to sell the Noosa Ferry.
“As today’s custodians of the Noosa Ferry, we bring next level energy and passion,” David says. “We respect Don’s vision, being mindful of the past yet considerate of future growth, whilst continuously refining our core offerings of the original Ferry Cruise between Tewantin and Hastings Street, which operates seven days a week.”
