Eco Expo Saves The World

One of the benefits of being an IN Noosa client is we always look for ways to connect you with things of interest. Knowing Nina from ResArtDesigns is eco-aware, we sent her to the Eco Expo 2019. Here’s her round-up of the best on offer.

Saturday morning and I awake at 6:30am. I was wanting a sleep-in but today is day two of the Eco Expo in Brisbane and I’m keen for an early start to save the world!

After a hearty breakfast of organic eggs, spinach and feta on sourdough toast, mushrooms on the side and the non-negotiable cup of plunged coffee, we asked (made) Mr 18-year-old to drop us from our Coes Creek home to the Nambour train station. Thanks to the Eco Expo, ticket holders ride free for the entire duration of the expo which is such an awesome green initiative. After an hour or so, taking in the (sadly so dry) sights of our country towns of Landsborough, Beerwah (shout out to my home town!) and Glasshouse Mountains, we arrive in Bowen Hills, and make our way up the hill to the exhibition centre entrance.

We’re greeted by friendly attendees, tickets are scanned (the expo requested visitors did not print tickets in a bid to save paper) and we make our way through the doors. A plethora of exhibition stands are laid out before us. Hmm, which way first?

The Tiny House Guys

We make a right turn and take in the tiny houses before us. Quality bespoke craftsmanship is evident in the two very different, but same company made, transportable houses. Each tiny house is made to spec, ensuring measurements and cabinetry to suit your own particular requirements. Recycled materials play a large role in each home. These are definitely not homes for the knick knack collectors, but trust me there is a place for everything when you’re minimalist living.

Hum Honey

Moving on, I’m delighted with the vast array of eco-businesses striving to bring forth a better way of life each with their own eco-friendly solutions to the problems facing us today. From luscious plant based skincare, eco diapers, cast iron cookware, Kimchi, workshops and keynote speakers, to our own home grown Hum Honey based in beautiful Maleny, Sunshine Coast Qld. Hum Honey have grown their business from 4 hives to 400 hives over a period of several years. They never relocate their hives, they just expand, giving their bees the stable home life and level of happiness that reflects in the quality of their single origin honey and honeycomb, and their multi award winning cold infused honey ‘cold fusion’. Fun fact – Hum Honey’s Hum Honey and Hum Honeycomb have an infinite shelf life! Not that it would last that long. (Matt Golinski has discovered the taste of Hum Honey – read all about it here).

Gutsy Ferments

Another stand out was Gutsy Ferments, a family owned and operated Australian business. Owner Wei’er co-presented the most delicious organic kraut and kimchi variations (psst try the carrot, ginger and turmeric), each fermented in oak barrels over a 4-6 week period, ensuring an optimal amount of gut friendly probiotics. And the results are in – it’s good. Based in Darra, Qld. Sunshine Coast stockists can be found on their website.

Composta

Fun for the whole family, Composta brings gardening and worm farming to you in one easy portable unit. Worms in the top, garden at the the bottom. And small enough that it would be just as at home on an apartment balcony as it would be on a country verandah. Composta is based in Burleigh Heads, Qld.

Tamburlaine Organic Wines

Tamburlaine Organic Wines bring their contemporary organic (and vegan) wines to the table in fine fashion. Located in the heart of Polkobin, 2 hours from Sydney, The Lodge also offers behind the scenes wine tours, cheese and wine tastings, and is also available for function or wedding hire. I feel a wedding renewal coming on.

Surfing Green

I was also delighted to meet Amy from Surfing Green – a surfboard company, based here in Coolum on our stunning Sunshine Coast. I purchased a U.S bio resin through them a few years back, until the company stopped supplying Australia. Since then I have sourced other bio resins, but am excited to hear they have a new resin with an even higher bio content! I’ll be back! Surfing Green‘s ethos is simple, the strive to “source the best eco-friendly surf alternatives and pride ourselves on being part of the solution for improving ocean health”.

Lifeline

Oh, and Lifeline brought the goods…. second hand goods! Tables upon tables of pre-loved clothes took up an entire end of the grounds. I’m talking giant mounds. I believe ball park of 50,000 items. Or was it 100,000? Oh and did I mention they were just $2 each! I surely would’ve missed my train home and had to sleep in one of those piles had it not been for my not-so-patient husband who literally dragged me by the arm out of there. In the end I came away with only one pair of slacks for my son. Even I, a die-hard op-shopper, couldn’t deal. Overwhelm, you won this time!

There was truly just such a wide selection of eco-friendly businesses making it their mission to bring kinder, greener options to the world…I could write all day. But I will save you from that, and what I would recommend is checking out www.savetheworldexpo.com.au for more information on everything that was offer.

Congratulations Eco Expo 2019! You made a big impression on me, and the thousands of other humans keen to minimise their footprint and lead by example. Til next year?
