05 Jun Michaela Burger – A Migrant’s Son
Cabaret powerhouse performer Michaela Burger brings her award-winning show ‘A Migrant’s Son’ to NOOSA alive! for one night only – Sunday 21 July at The J.
Direct from a sell-out season at Adelaide Cabaret Festival, ‘A Migrant’s Son is a true story exploring migration from Greece to Australia during the 1930’s. This extraordinary new work conveys incredible historical events that are brought to life through original compositions and local community choirs, creating a unique and touching account that is both hard-hitting and hilarious.
Written and performed by award-winning cabaret star Michaela Burger, this is a tale about a man, the son of a poor migrant, who defied all odds and rose above adversity.
From early morning deliveries for the family bakery at age seven, down opal mines in Coober Pedy and opening a chain of discount supermarkets, his unrelenting determination to build a successful life is comical and dramatic; as he pushes through like an unstoppable force and is willing to sacrifice everything for his family.
The show touches deeply on topics of racism, intolerance, judgement and the struggles presented by migration. Spanning nearly 100 years, it traverses from Russia to the Australian outback – following the hardship, ingenuity, tragedy and triumph present in all migrants’ stories.
Described by Kate Ceberano as “an asset to the cabaret community”, Burger is also the recipient of the award for Best Cabaret Adelaide Fringe 2016 and has been nominated for a Helpmann Academy for Best Cabaret Performer 2016. In addition to touring extensively with her hit show ‘Exposing Edith’ (the life and songs of Edith Piaf), her most recent performing credits include ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ (Southbank London/State Theatre SA/Windmill Co.) ‘Can You hear Colour?’ (Patch Theatre/2018 Adelaide Festival), and ‘Brel: The Immortal Troubadour’ (2017 Adelaide Cabaret Festival).
