With saltwater in his veins and a deep appreciation for the natural world, Tom Carstens proudly owns the newly launched Kingfisher Safari Co, offering guided tours and private charters on the luxe Noosa River cruise you’ve been missing. Tom’s love for the outdoors and his natural affinity for people drew him to tourism and hospitality, and it was while working at a luxury lodge on the edge of Kakadu National Park that the idea to return to his roots and start his own luxury tourism business took hold. So, with a dream, business plan and boatloads of experience, Tom returned to his childhood home of Noosa to launch his luxury cruising company with a strong focus on personalised service.
Purpose-built to Tom’s specifications, the brand new Mancraft Pontoon, Azure, accommodates up to 12 guests and offers a range of experiences exploring the waterways between the Noosa River inlet and Lake Cootharaba. Departing daily from Gympie Terrace, Tom oversees every aspect of the Azure experience, from expert commentary and wildlife watching to catering to every need. Kingfisher Safari Co can also deliver you to beachside celebrations or riverside weddings in style.
“Our tours and private charters offer the perfect way to celebrate special occasions, whether it’s an intimate gathering or a larger group,” says Tom.
The offer includes cruises from sunrise to sunset (champagne optional after 10am!), a Sunday pub run to the historic Apollonian Hotel, a lunchtime cruise and river transfers for special occasions. Tours include light refreshments, and often the first round of drinks is on Tom! Plus, with a full liquor license and an amply-stocked bar, guests can enjoy a quiet tipple while motoring along on the beautiful Noosa River. Azure is fully accessible, featuring a wide entry gate, spacious floors, a barge front and motorised ramp making boarding easy and providing access directly onto the sand. A swim ladder allows for dips and freshwater washdowns and a clever full-size bathroom and change room are discreetly hidden but pop up when needed, ensuring the views stay front and centre.
There’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy, including wheelchair users who can easily glide down the deck, do a quick U-turn, and find the perfect spot to relax and soak in the scenery. For those seeking a bit more action, Tom can also provide a stand-up paddleboard, lilypad, and fishing gear. An avid bird watcher, Tom enjoys sharing the remarkable natural landscape he calls his office.
“I enjoy taking guests away from the hustle and bustle to reveal the serene side of the river,” he said.”The birdlife is remarkable with migratory shorebirds and wading birds frequently spotted close to the water’s edge.”
Regular sightings include majestic birds of prey like the White-Bellied Sea Eagles, various Kite species and the boat’s namesake, the Azure Kingfisher. Guests might even witness a kangaroo swimming across the river! With quiet four-stroke motors, Azure glides silently and gently providing comfort for guests and opportunities for intimate wildlife encounters.
