Let’s face it, winter can make even the softest skin a little rough around the edges,  Jodie Cameron discovers the lotions and potions to keep hydration in motion.

Loving the skin you’re in can sometimes be a challenge, especially during the drier months so no excuses are necessary to treat yourself because who doesn’t love a good pamper sesh!

With more than twenty years experience and a recent Gold Award at the annual Dermalogica PRO Recognition Awards under her belt, Jenny Wilson and her experienced team of therapists at Noosa Body & Skincare are here to help you emerge your best radiant self!

The Dermalogica Awards honour outstanding achievements of professional skin therapists with regards to excellence and innovation, and this accolade marks the third major win for the team at Noosa Body & Skincare.

“We are thrilled to receive another Gold Award — understanding Demalogica and all its products really helps our clients make a preferred choice when purchasing skincare, getting advice or having skin treatments and facials,” Jenny said.

With an International Advanced Diploma in Beauty Therapy, Jenny and many of her therapists have undertaken additional training through Dermalogica to earn Expert level accreditation.

Expert level can take a therapist about a year to achieve, but by doing this extra training therapists learn so much more than what’s covered in a basic Diploma of Beauty. My team and I are all very like-minded and we have a great balance of therapists with decades of experience as well as loving the vibrancy and passion that a young, newly trained staff member brings.”

From knowing the difference between sensitive or sensitised skins; teen acne versus adult acne; or identifying ageing in the skin, understanding how it happens and how to treat it; is imperative to her business.

“Working in the beauty industry isn’t just a job, it’s a career and you never stop learning. I love all aspects of my job, it’s rewarding and fun — even the Brazilians!” laughs Jenny.

“I have been lucky enough to collect a wonderful tribe of clients along the way, some of them I have been treating for two decades. I love that social aspect of my job — hearing about recent travels and checking in on their family, it’s definitely one of my favourite parts of the job.”

Working across three treatment rooms in their chic European-style salon in Noosa Junction, Jenny and her team specialise in skin therapy and other beauty care services from indulgent facials and massages to identifying problematic skin issues using the latest technology.

“We often use face mapping during a facial to analyse the skin in sections because the skin isn’t necessarily the same over the entire face,” she shares. “DNA skin testing requires a simple cheek swab to be sent away for analysis and is amazing for the in-depth information it can provide.

“Looking into the future of your skin can be confronting but once we have that information, we can develop a strategy to address potential problem areas before they arise.”

DNA skin testing is broken into five categories: collagen; wrinkling/glycation; sun damage and pigmentation; free radical damage; and skin sensitivity.

“We love the skin sensitivity category because it helps to confirm if a client’s skin is sensitive or sensitised, and each category tells us if the genes are normal, impaired or deficient,” Jenny says. “The test also provides recommendations of topical ingredients, internal supplements and professional skin treatments.”

In the forever changing world of beauty, keeping abreast with industry standards from the Aesthetic Beauty Industry Council is something Jenny is particularly passionate about.

“I think it’s easy to step out of your area of expertise and this is where things can go wrong,” she said. “We stick within our parameters and work on getting our clients their healthiest, glowing skin possible.”

So with winter just around the corner, how can we avoid dehydrated skin?

“Sorry to be abrasive but  – exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!” Jenny says. “This crucial step not only removes the rough dead skin by creating a smooth surface ideal for locking in moisture but ensures the oh-so-important serums and moisturisers can absorb into the skin.

“Gentle and intermittent exfoliation is important throughout winter, as is cleansing morning and night to remove further debris and dead skin cells.”

The skin is very intelligent, often giving us vital indications when it’s time to mix things up or try a new product.

“If your cheeks feel tight after a cleanse, then it’s a good idea to change cleansers because your skin is communicating with you,” Jenny says. “Switching to a heavier moisturiser in winter also helps lock in extra moisture.”

For really dry skin, Jenny loves Dermalogica’s Super Rich Repair on your face and a shea butter moisturiser to keep the body hydrated.

“Bath with oils or milks like Pure Fiji’s Bath Milk or Exotic Oil are particularly nourishing – but don’t have the water too hot,” Jenny advises.

Unfortunately for many of us, we tend to look more aged in winter — due to the simple fact that the skin is dryer and not glowing with our wonderfully intense Queensland humidity.

“Staying hydrated inside and out can slow wrinkles but what your skin really loves is to be layered,” Jenny says.

“A hydration spritz like Dermalogica’s Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist, or Ultra Calming Mist can give your skin an extra boost. They’re ideal for travel and can be spritzed over makeup to lock in moisture.”

If facials are your thing, Jenny recommends indulging in a 75-minute Signature Facial designed to identify your skin needs while incorporating extra time for a neck and shoulder massage — amen to that!

Winter is also the best time to get your peel on because it allows the skin to achieve the results it needs without the harsh summer elements.

If you’re looking for a hybrid approach, Jenny recommends a facial plus a treatment like the Pro Firm Skin treatment which combines a mild peel with micro current technology infusion, as well as an eye peel that’s gentle yet hydrating.

Jenny and her team love Dermalogica’s new Phyto Nature range which suits all skin types and addresses fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and elasticity.

“The Phyto Nature Firming Serum features two serums in one; the Phyto Nature Oxygen Cream is one of our top sellers because it suits all skin types while treating dryness and dehydration; and the Phyto Nature Lifting Eye Cream is a transformative eye cream and the first ever that can be applied on the eyelids.”

Jenny’s favourite winter treatment is the MelanoPro Peel — a six week process that sees the skin gently flaked in the first week then continuously moisturised over the following five weeks with Continuous Cream Morning and Night that keeps the skin active and turning over.

“The MelanoPro Peel isn’t as visually harsh as other peels so I was still able to work and cover up with makeup,” Jenny shares. “I am  addicted, it’s such an amazing peel for pigmentation and fine lines and my skin looks fresh, vibrant and youthful.”

So, ditch the dry days and jump on the hydration train. Next stop: Glowing Skin!
