Magic Matters at Exercise Matters
John Caruso discovers a place where encouragement replaces ego and every workout leaves you wanting more.
Near the Beckmans Road and Swanbourne Way roundabout, you’ll find Exercise Matters. With its location removed from the rush of daily life, this isn’t your standard allied health clinic. It’s a purpose built Exercise Physiology Clinic that services a large proportion of the Noosa community.
With decades of experience, Dr Sven Rees had a clear mission: to build the region’s leading Exercise Physiology clinic combining state-of-the-art equipment & technology with a welcoming space where clients feel supported, connected, and part of a genuine community.
“Treating injuries and improving one’s health should be accessible, welcoming, and rewarding,” he says.
Exercise Matters clinic has grown into a local fixture where personal stories mean as much as physical progress, and where seven years of sweat, tears and laughter have turned clients into a community.
If you want to see what happens when serious science gets a good dose of local spirit, this is where to start.
Sven remembers the beginning clearly.
“I wanted a space where clinical rigour meets real-world results, a place that felt welcoming, not intimidating,” he said.
After making the move north from Sydney with his wife, psychologist Dr Jasmine Green, and their kids, Sven brought decades of experience: academic research, high-performance sport, and a rare, human perspective on what ‘movement is medicine’ really means.
Launching a new clinic in the middle of uncertain COVID times wasn’t easy, but Sven knew Noosa needed a specialised Exercise Physiology Clinic where locals are known by name and empowered to achieve improvements in their health.
Step inside Exercise Matters and you’ll find a space alive with energy, laughter and just enough ‘data nerd’ spirit to keep every session on point.
Beneath the nerdy intellect of exercise physiology, there’s a sense of compassion and fun that makes the technical stuff feel simple, and the simple stuff feel special.
“If we peel everything back, the real magic is our community,” Sven tells me.
You don’t just see it, you hear it. Take their legendary Christmas Party where clients get together to celebrate the year with fun performances that memorialise their journey and victories. Last year, the team flipped the script with “I’m Just Sven” to the tune of “I’m Just Ken”, complete with fun awards and gifts that made everyone feel like a champion.
It’s become a tradition and one of those moments where you realise exercise might not be the most important thing happening in the room.
The Exercise Matters secret ingredient really lies in the people behind the team: Annika Coyne is passionate about women’s health and injury prevention; Jarrad Greentree is a triathlon-obsessed local who loves treating sporting injuries; while Ebony Blackstone can spin rehab and life chats without missing a beat.
They’re experts, yes, but the real story is how they show up for clients. One week it’s a high five for a pain-free walk, the next it’s supporting someone through loss or celebrating ‘personal best’ milestones.
This isn’t a clinic of cookie-cutter programs. Each clinician is highly skilled in their respective areas of interest, and they make sure each client’s program is tailored to their needs.
Everyone is an individual and treated as such. Take the Clinical Exercise Classes – no matter what walk of life; retirees, athletes, newcomers, there is a clinical yet welcoming space for them.
These group classes have a clear clinical focus that also offers connection, confidence, and a supportive community for every participant. Whether they are managing bone density, back pain or health improvements, the clinic provides a safe space and is the backdrop to countless quiet victories.
“Many of our clients who join our classes end up becoming friends,” says Dr Sven Rees. “You see it in the way they support one another, staying connected beyond the clinic and showing up for each other well beyond class schedules.”
So, what really is the philosophy?
“Consistency beats intensity. Start where you are, do what you can, repeat,” Sven says. Advice that’s as much about courage as it is about calf raises.
Every client’s version of ‘strong’ is different, and the team will tell you that progress trumps perfection, every time.
Any place worth talking about has something at its core. For this crew, it’s their ‘clinical huddle’, a weekly ritual where the team swaps research, dives into tough cases, and, most importantly, checks in on each other. They live and breathe their profession and living what they coach: active, connected, and full of small pleasures that echo through the clinic. A perfect day for Sven is getting up early for a hit of tennis & coffee; Jarrad trains for Ironman; Ebony’s learning to surf; and Annika recently notched up her first triathlon.
Exercise Matters isn’t just about rehab, reps, lab tests or VO2 max scores.
It’s a true reflection of the local community – a place where clinical expertise meets genuine warmth, where hard work often ends in laughter, and where everything starts with one question: ‘What matters most to you about your health right now?’
Whatever the answer, the team at Exercise Matters brings structured assessment, individualised exercise prescription, and ongoing support to help people move better, stay stronger, and live the life they want for themselves.
And that’s what really matters.
“What started off not too long ago with a handful of loyal clients and a vision to make movement accessible, Exercise Matters has quickly grown into a leading local Exercise Physiology clinic,” Sven says. “Over seven years, we’ve invested in state-of-the-art facilities while staying true to our community root, where every person’s story matters as much as their progress.”
