What do you get when you bring together a highly trained ophthalmologist and a rocket scientist? Noosa’s leading eye surgery clinic, as Melanie Rosettenstein discovers.
Just six years into their mission to deliver exceptional eye care to the Noosa community, Insight Eye Surgery is going from strength to strength, most recently expanding into a purpose-designed clinic in the heart of Noosaville.
It’s a success story that began with a dream and a serendipitous alignment of the stars.
Queensland-trained ophthalmologist Dr Madeleine Adams has worked across Australia and internationally, from Central Australia to Perth and even remote communities in Nepal.
But she and husband Richard, an engineer with a PhD in Aerospace, always felt drawn to Southeast Queensland’s lifestyle and to Noosa, where they’d holidayed for years.
So, when the opportunity arose to bring world class technologies in eye care to the area, they didn’t hesitate.
“The opportunity arose to partner with Noosa Hospital to fill a gap in local services,” says Madeleine.
“Our family has always loved Noosa, so when the chance came to live and work here, it almost felt too good to be true. The hospital was keen to establish the service, and from there, everything came together beautifully.”
Since opening in 2019, Insight Eye Surgery has moved three times to keep pace with growing demand.
“We started in rooms at the hospital, then moved to Thomas Street, and now we’re in our new home on Mary Street,” says Madeleine.
“It’s been an exciting journey.”
The clinic’s rapid growth, she says, is down to their incredible team and a strong foundation of family values.
“We treat our patients and staff like family, how we’d want to be treated ourselves,” she said. “And because we run the business independently, we can make sure every detail is done right.”
That patient-first approach has helped build a loyal base in Noosa and beyond.
“We have people coming from interstate and even overseas,” she says.
“We’re not just healthcare providers; we’re part of a community. We live here, and our patients are our neighbours.
“That community spirit is something people really feel.”
Insight Eye Surgery is now one of the region’s larger surgical eye practices, handling a full suite of procedures including cataract surgery, refractive lens exchanges, glaucoma surgery, and Implantable Contact Lenses.
All surgical treatments are performed at Noosa Hospital, while non-surgical services are offered on site at the Mary Street clinic.
These include laser treatments, eye injections for macular disease, and minor procedures like biopsies or treating skin cancers around the eye.
The clinic also houses a dry eye unit, run by dedicated optometrists, offering targeted treatments for a condition that surprisingly affects many people.
“Dry eye is a big area of need,” says Madeleine. “We’ve invested in advanced technology so we can go beyond prescribing drops to offer more personalised, effective care.”
The design of the new clinic reflects the same level of care. It has been built with accessibility and comfort in mind, from wide corridors and ground-floor access to high-contrast doorframes and height-adjustable chairs.
“Eye problems can be scary, and many patients arrive feeling nervous,” she says. “We’ve created a space that helps them feel safe and at ease. It’s all about the experience.”
Beyond their clinical work, Madeleine and Richard are deeply committed to giving back to their adopted home.
“I serve as a volunteer on the Noosa Hospital Medical Advisory Committee which provides oversight of the high standard of surgery performed at the hospital,” says Madeleine. “Across the region we have a fantastic network of optometrists and GPs who we work with collaboratively to provide eye health care.
“As a practice we try to give back to these professionals by running regular education sessions to strengthen the team-based approach to patient care and outside of medicine our team loves getting involved in the community, such as fundraising through the Noosa Triathlon.”
Each year, the Insight Eye Surgery team chooses a cause to support, from women’s shelters to breast cancer research to school sponsorships.
“It means a lot to the staff to support something that feels personal,” she says.
Looking ahead, the team is focused on continual improvement, refining their service while staying ahead of rapid technological changes.
“It’s an incredibly fast-moving field,” says Madeleine.
“AI is already transforming diagnostics and research, and new imaging technologies allow us to examine the eye in remarkable detail.
“There’s so much potential on the horizon.”
With strong roots in the Noosa community and an eye firmly on the future, Insight Eye Surgery is set to keep evolving while staying true to the strong family and community values that started it all.
Now that’s 20/20 vision.
