Heart, Hope & Healing with GenesisCare
Melanie Rosettenstein meets three leading oncologists to discover their journey, personal approach to patient care and what they love about Noosa.
As specialists in radiation oncology, GenesisCare has built a rock-solid reputation for delivering expert cancer care across Australia. Since opening their state-of-the-art Noosa centre a year ago, the foundation of their holistic approach lies in the skilled and dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and support staff behind every patient journey.
GenesisCare is proud to be the region’s leading comprehensive radiation therapy centre, where patient care is managed by a dedicated consultant and supported by a compassionate multidisciplinary team.
We check in with three doctors to learn more about their inspiration to work in oncology, their roles, and what they love about our beautiful region.
Dr David Schlect, Radiation Oncologist
A Sunshine Beach local and poet who enjoys reciting verse whether on or off duty. As a father of four daughters, he feels blessed to be surrounded by strong, inspiring women.
Why did you become an oncologist and what is your specialisation?
My interest was sparked by a family friend’s experience with cancer and I specialise in neuro cancers and stereotactic radiation therapy, which is particularly effective for small, well-defined tumours in the brain,
spine, lungs, and other areas.
Have you adopted any wellness practices that help you recharge?
I love the walk from Sunshine Beach to Massimo’s Gelateria in Noosa Heads. The exercise is great, and the reward is the world’s best ice cream.
What do you love about Noosa?
The unique geography that connects land and sea is spiritually uplifting to me. No matter how busy the day, being in Noosa helps me feel grounded.
How do you approach patient care?
I like to foster a close, personal engagement with patients. When they feel genuinely cared for, they’re more likely to open up, share concerns, and fully participate in their treatment journey.
Dr Bradley Wong, Radiation Oncologist
Bradley loves spending time with his family at the beach and giving back to his community.
Why did you become an oncologist and what is your specialisation?
I treat all cancer types but specialise in skin cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. I chose oncology as it allows me to combine advanced medical science with compassionate, long-term care.
Have you adopted any wellness practices that help you recharge?
I like to stay active and ran my first marathon last year, definitely a ‘one and done’, but still enjoy social running.
I also love walking our two French bulldogs along the beach while pushing my one-year-old in her pram.
What do you love about Noosa?
I love the diversity and warmth of the people. My wife and I support a Noosa-based charity that provides educational scholarships for students in hardship, Altitude Scholarships. Helping to give kids a chance is incredibly uplifting.
How do you approach patient care?
I believe in combining technology, research-backed medicine, and a holistic approach to deliver the best outcomes for patients and their families.
Dr Sophia Ly, Radiation Oncologist
Sophia enjoys Muay Thai, travelling, and helping people with their wellness and mental health goals.
Why did you become an oncologist and what is your specialisation?
Oncology allows me to combine complex medical problem solving with forging deep, ongoing relationships. My focus areas include breast, lung and gastrointestinal cancers as well as palliative radiation therapy.
Have you adopted any wellness practices that help you recharge?
Muay Thai has proven to be a great for my mental and physical health and I love walking Noosa National Park to recharge my mind and stay active.
How do you approach patient care?
I take a personal approach, advocating for each person as we navigate their cancer journey. My priority is to guide them with empathy, support, and research-backed medical care.
Reflecting on the Noosa centre’s first birthday, Chief Medical Officer Dr Marie Burke said they were early adopters of the latest evidence-based treatment techniques and technology, including personalised medicine.
“This ensures our patients receive care that is always appropriate for them and kinder to their body,” she said.
As they celebrate this milestone, it’s clear that GenesisCare’s greatest strength lies not just in advanced technology but in the people who bring heart, hope, and healing to every patient’s journey.
That’s compassion with care.
