A Calming Influence with Cradle Consulting
Nicole May meets Noosa-based infant and child sleep specialist Joanna Sweeney, whose science-backed approach has taken Cradle Consulting from the Sunshine Coast to families around the world.
Sleep deprivation has a way of shrinking the world. Long nights blur into mornings, confidence gives way to doubt, and the search isn’t just for sleep – it’s for someone you trust to tell you there’s a way through.
As a mum who’s lived through those heavy days, I’m relieved to discover Cradle Consulting founder Joanna Sweeney. Around Noosa, she’s simply known as ‘Jo’ – or the baby whisperer. Within minutes of meeting her, it’s easy to understand why parents hand her the thing they value the most – their little ones and their trust. That trust has been earned over more than two decades as an internationally-registered midwife and infant specialist; you can just feel that her care is genuine.
Jo has supported families from all walks of life, from earning the trust of high-profile families to helping women and babies in correctional centres; achievements she humbly brushes off.
“I still get imposter syndrome,” she admits. “I’m a mum too, so I understand the exhaustion, the second-guessing and how overwhelming sleep can feel.
“But I also bring more than two decades of clinical experience, a Bachelor of Science degree and specialist study in infant sleep. That combination matters to me – families deserve empathy, but they also deserve advice grounded in science.”
One recent client, Michaela Wain, a visible role model and Australian-based content creator with over 380,000 followers, was navigating the same reality as countless parents: a five-month-old baby who had been waking every 45 minutes, as well as an active toddler.
“Michaela’s situation was not unusual,” Jo says. “Joshua wasn’t her first baby. She was well versed in infant sleep and had exhausted every avenue.
“While doing everything she could and juggling two young children, she’d reached the point where she simply couldn’t piece it all together alone.
“Like any other concern, there comes a point where you seek professional guidance. Sleep should be no different.”
The Cradle experience is exactly that: professional guidance towards the result families have often been desperately searching – and hoping – for. For Michaela and her husband Bev, it meant checking into a hotel for two nights of uninterrupted rest while Jo took over their home.
It requires an immense level of trust, with Bev congratulating Jo that, despite his wife receiving countless offers from sleep specialists wanting to work with her, Cradle was the one she trusted. Walking into the beautiful chaos of a two-child household, Jo didn’t just focus on baby Joshua; she settled both boys and ensured the parents returned to a plan they could actually sustain.
Jo’s approach remained rooted in gentleness. There was no cry-it-out method here. Instead, she used her expertise to time pauses, allowing Joshua to learn the art of self-settling. Michaela said the shift was life-changing.
“What I loved most was how gentle Jo’s approach was. It was never about leaving Joshua to cry for hours or following a one-size-fits-all method,” said Michaela. “She genuinely cared about what was best for our family and worked with our routine to create a plan that felt achievable and right for us.”
Within just three days, Joshua was sleeping through the night, allowing Michaela to feel like she could be a better mum to both her boys.
“Jo was always there to answer our questions, reassure us, and guide us every step of the way,” Michaela said. “One of our biggest fears when it came to sleep training was that there would be lots of crying, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
“Everything was done in such a calm, supportive and gentle way. The positive impact it’s had on our family has been incredible, and I’ll always be so grateful that we chose to work with Jo.”
Jo is adamant that this level of service with Cradle is available to everybody. Her mission is global, and her heart is firmly in public health. She’s currently working with a cattle farmer in the remote Northern Territory who books phone consultations every eight weeks because the nearest general practitioner is a five-hour drive away.
“Sleep doesn’t discriminate,” Jo says.
This philosophy has birthed Cradle Gives Back, a new initiative where Jo selects one family a month who cannot afford her fees and provides a free consultation. She knows that many of the families who need sleep support simply can’t afford to access it.
Whether she’s got an overnight stay in Noosa, flying to New York to help a client or providing advice through private messages on social media to gently warn parents about an unsafe sleep position she spotted in a cute photo online, Jo reminds me that parenting was never meant to be navigated alone.
Beyond sleep, Jo is caring for families through the often-overlooked postpartum season where mothers need nurturing just as deeply as their children. Every plan is tailored with intention, recognising that no two babies – or families – are the same. Jo isn’t forcing a harsh method. She’s restoring confidence, offering reassurance and reminding parents that they don’t have to navigate sleep struggles alone. She’s helping mothers find themselves again, and helping families feel held, understood, confident and empowered.
AIRWAY SAFETY
Jo’s recent Instagram post on Airway Safety has resonated globally and she’s made it her mission to ensure every parent knows the chin-to-chest rules:
• Flat and Firm: The only safe way for a newborn to sleep is on a flat, firm surface.
• The Gap: Always ensure there is a clear gap between a baby’s chin and their chest to keep the airway open.
• Play vs Sleep: Raised loungers and cozy nests are for supervised play, never for unsupervised sleep.
