Crêpe Expectations at Flo’s Crêperie
Everyone’s favourite local French restaurant has launched a shiny new cookbook to help you master the art of creating authentic crêpes and galettes at home – fantastique! Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer prepares to get a little bit Francey from the comfort of her own kitchen.
Do you have a craving for crêpes? Going gaga over galettes? Want to learn how to incorporate these très délicieux French staples into your meal repertoire? Enter the good folk at Flo’s Crêperie, who have not only encouraged the Sunshine Coast to fall in love with the magic of crêpes and galettes via their Noosa Junction and Mooloolaba restaurants, but are now sharing their passion with the community through their gorgeous new cookbook, which is guaranteed to have you racing for the kitchen faster than you can say ‘oui oui!’
The Flo’s Crêpes cookbook has been a serious labour of love from the duo behind Flo’s Crêperie – Bretagne native Florian Guillemard and his Australian wife, Michelle – who’ve distilled their passion for these very special French dishes into a cookbook filled with beautiful images, mouthwatering sweet and savoury recipes, childhood memories, and so much more. Whether you’re a seasoned crêpe-flipper or a total beginner, Flo’s Crêpes simplifies the techniques and elevates the flavours, making it easy for anyone to master crêpes and galettes at home.
From crowd-pleasing classics like the Bacon and Mushroom Galette and the Chocolate-Hazelnut Crêpe with ice cream and strawberries, to more unusual dishes – think Argentinian Prawn Galette with Chimichurri or Matcha Whipped Cream Crêpes – the book has something for everyone, with crêpes and galettes for an easy midweek meal through to ‘Francier’ options (including fiery flambée crêpes, party crêpes and an elegant Mille Crêpe Cake!) that you’ll be proud to serve up to a big group of friends. The cookbook starts with simple step-by-step instructions for making crêpes and galette bases like a pro, before moving on to all the ways you can give these beloved French dishes a modern, delicious twist. It’s a celebration of quality produce, fresh flavours and the joy that comes from eating delicious food, and Flo and Michelle’s enthusiasm shines through on every page.
As Flo says in the introduction to the book: “It’s hard to find a more all-round dish than the crêpe – one you can eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert or anything in between. Crêpes are sweet, savoury, healthy, decadent, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free… It’s all about enjoying the exploration of the world of crêpes, having fun and being creative.”
At IN Noosa Magazine, we’re passionate about food, community and the power of print, so we were delighted to come onboard as the publishers of Flo’s Crêpes to help Michelle and Flo bring their ‘crêpetacular’ vision to life. With our designer Ali Smith in charge of layout, publisher Deb Caruso managing the subediting, Michelle and Flo writing the content, and photographer Florence LeMyre behind the camera, it slowly came together into a gorgeous hardcover 200-page book filled with stunning images that’s been designed to be used, referred to, loved and treasured in your kitchen for years to come. Flo’s Crêpes makes the perfect gift for the foodie in your life, the crêpe curious, the person who has everything, your office Secret Santa, or even yourself – I’m certainly hoping for one under my tree this year.
Bon appetit – get ready to go with the Flo for a festive season full of crêpes!
