Sublime Slivers at Studio One Noosa

Artists and art lovers from Noosa and beyond gathered at Studio One Noosa for the opening of Slivers – a creative exploration of the humble barcode, discovers Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer.

The brainchild of Studio One Noosa co-founders Richard Donelly and fine artist Juanita Van Den Bergh, the striking Slivers exhibition features the work of nine artists, all tasked with the challenge of creating a multi panelled artwork or series of stunning ‘slivers’.

These pieces can be displayed together as one cohesive artwork or arranged in various formations to form an ever-changing, barcode-like installation that’s as mesmerising as it is unique, with the potential for endless variations depending on the placement of pieces.

Exploring identity, uniformity and the hidden beauty in everyday codes, Slivers plays with structure, repetition and rebellion – why can’t we have just one sliver of art or a series of slivers on our wall, and who says we have to play by the traditional rules when it comes to displaying art in our homes?

Every artist was hand-picked by Juanita, and the result is a collaborative showcase that transcends the typical exhibition format to create a singular, striking whole.

Alongside the work of Juanita, the exhibition showcases pieces by local and internationally-recognised artists Debra Hutton, Chris Hooper, Charlotte Wensley, Beatrice Prost, Saint Chalom, Prue Clay, Bronwyn Barton and Krystal Bradford, each bringing their own unique aesthetic.

“I really wanted to have that interplay of different colours and different techniques coming together to form a whole,” Juanita explained. “It’s really special to see it on display after each artist had worked in isolation on their pieces over the past few months.”

Opening night was an evening of art, wine and creative conversation, as attendees marvelled at the concept and compositions, and considered which works spoke to them – both individually and as part of an unexpected series. Slivers is on show until 21 June – don’t miss the opportunity to see it and secure your slice of the action.

Following on from Slivers, Patrick Guildford will present a solo exhibition of works, On History and Landscapes, inspired by Australia’s rich history and presented in a rich and diverse display that is sure to astound.

Juanita will take the opportunity to be the artist-in-residence at her Studio One Noosa gallery while she also finalises another collaborative exhibition, Into the Woods, and she has again chosen a select group of accomplished and diverse artists to explore the visual poetry of forests, real or imagined.

Into the Woods invites the viewer to not just see the woods, but to feel them, walk through them, and maybe even get a little lost.

Reflecting the current trend of earth and forest-inspired palettes, Juanita said the exhibition would evoke more than just a walk through the forest.

“It’s a powerful and poetic invitation, a call to explore nature, story and self,” she said. “Forests have long been places of transformation and can represent sanctuary, mystery chaos or calm.”

The return of the Pretty in Pink McGrath Foundation fundraiser will provide a colourful shift as 50 artists donate a bespoke 50 x 50 cm piece with a hint of pink to be auctioned online and during the exhibition in October.

Studio One Noosa is dedicated to bringing the creative community together, giving local artists physical and virtual space to exhibit their work and connect with buyers through the Studio One Noosa gallery and online channels.

“Many artists are deep in creation mode, and their amazing works are piling up in their studios without an audience,” she said.

“We love helping promote them and find the people who love their work.”

Juanita is also one of the driving forces behind the Gateway to Art collective celebrating the artists, galleries, makers, retailers and food purveyors located in the cool, ever-evolving industrial estate on Gateway Drive (see previous page).

“We want Gateway Drive to be known as a thriving, inviting area, where people can spend an afternoon visiting galleries, chatting to creatives and enjoying delicious food,” she said. “If we band together and dream big, I know we can make it happen.”
