The Wise Woman of Sleep with Cradle Consulting
As a grandparent, there is something extraordinary about watching your child become a parent. It is beautiful, emotional and deeply humbling. But alongside the joy often comes exhaustion, uncertainty and an overwhelming amount of advice. Carlie Wacker meets the wise woman of our village who is quickly becoming a national treasure for parents, grandparents and carers.
Everyone has an opinion on babies and sleep. Just ask Google and you’ll be offered a thousand conflicting answers before breakfast. Social media swings wildly between strict routines and ‘just go with the flow’ parenting. Grandparents remember doing things one way, modern parents are told another and somewhere in the middle sits a tired family simply wanting peace. That is where Joanna Sweeney quietly steps in.
Known to many families as the ‘Sleep Architect’, Joanna is the founder of Cradle Consulting which is a Noosa-based service now in demand nationwide for its gentle, medical science-backed approach to infant sleep and family wellbeing. Spend a few minutes with Jo and another title feels equally fitting: wise woman. In many ways, she is a modern version of the village midwife – calm, intuitive and deeply invested in caring, not just for babies but for entire families. Unlike the outdated ‘cry it out’ methods many people still associate with sleep training, Joanna’s philosophy is built entirely around connection.
“I want families to bond more, not less,” she explains. “This is never about breaking attachment. It’s about helping families feel rested, supported and connected.”
With more than 23 years of experience as a midwife and postnatal health professional, Joanna brings something increasingly rare to the modern parenting world: genuine lived expertise. She understands that every baby, every parent, every family is different. I am a stepparent, now step grandparent. I never had my own babies, so I had just as much learning to do as my stepchildren Kimberley, Jesse and Chris when the new mini Wackers came along. I’ve watched in awe as these kids became parents and navigated this new chapter, all quite differently. I’ve been deeply grateful to be included in the lives of my beautiful and deeply loved grandchildren Ivy, Emelia, Lola and Wolfgang.
My husband Mark, new mum Kimberley, Wolfgang and I spent over an hour with Joanna chatting all things infant sleep and learning so much from this wise and truly beautiful human.
One of the most fascinating things Joanna explains is how biologically complex infant sleep really is. Babies are born with a maternal supply of melatonin passed through the placenta, which begins to deplete around eight weeks of age.
“That’s why newborns can sleep almost anywhere,” she says. “Then suddenly parents think something has changed because babies become fussier about where they sleep. But really, their bodies are developing and they need the right environment to support sleep.”
Cue the blackout blinds, quiet spaces and gentle routines many modern parents now swear by. Listening to Joanna explain sleep is like listening to someone translate a language most parents have been desperately trying to decode. She shares her knowledge on melatonin, circadian rhythms and the vagus nerve with the warmth of a friend rather than the coldness of a textbook. She explains how babies hum themselves to sleep to activate relaxation responses in the body.
She gently reframes the signs parents often mistake for hunger when in fact a baby may simply be tired. But perhaps what makes Joanna so special is that she never removes emotion from the equation. In fact, she embraces the entire family unit. As a step grandma, I found that incredibly reassuring. Jo actively encourages grandparents to be part of consultations, often printing out personalised plans so everyone feels included and confident in supporting the baby consistently.
“Families used to raise babies together,” she says. “Now parents are overwhelmed by conflicting information. Sometimes they just need somebody they trust to help quiet the noise.”
It is no surprise then that Cradle Consulting has become increasingly sought-after not only in Noosa but across Australia. Jo offers video consultations nationwide, allowing families from major cities through to regional communities to access her support remotely. For local clients she provides in-home consultations where she observes family rhythms, feeding, routines and sleep environments in real time.
And for visitors holidaying in Noosa, Joanna offers perhaps the ultimate modern luxury: restorative family support. She can stay within your holiday accommodation and work gently with your baby while parents actually rest, reconnect and enjoy their time away. Not in a detached nanny-like way but as a calm presence helping create sustainable rhythms the entire family can continue once they return home.
It feels particularly relevant in today’s world where parents are carrying so much mental load, often without ‘the village’ previous generations relied upon. Jo sees exhausted mothers who feel guilty for not coping, fathers trying to balance work and sleepless nights, and grandparents wanting to help but unsure how modern parenting has changed. Rather than imposing rigid rules, she tailors her guidance entirely to the family sitting in front of her.
“There’s no one-size-fits-all,” she says. “A family dealing with postnatal anxiety needs different support to a relaxed family who simply need structure and confidence.”
That deeply intuitive approach is perhaps why Joanna’s clients speak about her with such gratitude. She is not simply teaching babies to sleep. She is helping households breathe again.
Helping mothers feel calmer. Helping relationships soften under less pressure. Helping grandparents feel useful and included rather than uncertain or outdated (or in my case, inexperienced).
In a world obsessed with quick fixes and loud opinions, Jo offers something far more powerful: wisdom, gentleness and genuine human connection. The kind once offered by the wise woman of the village. Only now, she arrives with science, compassion and perhaps a set of blackout blinds.
Dear wise woman Joanna, we are deeply grateful for the time you took to share your experience with us in our home. Although, mumma Kimberley and bubba Wolfgang are super chill, Grandma and Granddad Wacker feel much more confident in our skills and connection. And that’s absolutely priceless.
