My hair and I have been having a moment lately. Between the sea salt and the humidity, I feel like I’m walking into spring feeling more flat than fabulous. After years of short hair, I’ve decided to grow it out, but with zero spare time to get to the hairdresser, I can feel myself caving and wanting to chop it all off again. What I need is a style to get me through the in-between phase, something I can wake up and wear, without any fuss. I turn to the professionals at Adrian J Hair in their stunning new location in The Pavilion, Noosa Junction.
Adrian is exactly the kind of hairdresser you want delivering your seasonal pep talk: warm, wickedly funny, and beautifully British so that even a lecture on split ends sounds like a compliment. From training in London with hair architects Vidal Sassoon to roles as a Creative Director, educator and a gig as global ambassador for L’Oréal, he has built a career around passion, precision, structure and creativity with the philosophy of listen first, then create. He pays attention to face shape, hair texture, lifestyle and personality, and he is not afraid to say when something will or won’t work.
The team around him is small but mighty. Lana, a senior stylist who’s been by Adrian’s side for nine years, also manages the salon, freeing him up to focus on what he does best – you, in the chair. Bek, an emerging stylist tipped to be a full-fledged colourist by year’s end, is bringing serious energy to the colour bar, while Astrid, the salon’s apprentice, is just starting her hairdressing journey. It’s the perfect mix of experience and enthusiasm, and you can feel the creative vibe the moment you walk in.
Adrian’s take on the season ahead that has me rethinking my whole approach to spring. Forget drastic overhaul – this is the season of hair that looks like you were simply born with it. For cuts, think soft, seamless layers, long sweeping fringes having their moment in the sun, and bobs going softer and infinitely more wearable. None of it requires a full arsenal of styling tools to pull it off which, frankly, is the whole point.
“We’re not chasing dramatic transformations this season,” Adrian says. “It’s all about enhancing what you already have: beautiful movement, softness and a cut that works with your hair’s natural texture rather than fighting it.”
For colour, rich, dimensional and low maintenance is in. Warm blondes, rich brunettes, caramel and copper are all still very much on the menu, but Adrian’s steering clients away from flat, high-contrast colour in favour of something with more depth.
“The key is subtle variation,” he says. “Carefully placed highlights, soft face-framing, tones that blend beautifully as they grow out.”
Translation: fewer urgent salon call-backs, and colour that gets better with time. Then there’s the finishing touch that ties everything together – shine, and styling that takes minutes, not hours.
If there’s one trend Adrian wants Noosa to take seriously this spring, it’s gloss.
“Healthy, glossy hair is the ultimate luxury, particularly through spring and summer, when sun, salt and humidity can put extra stress on the hair,” he says.
Gloss treatments and nourishing masks are no longer a nice-to-have – they’re doing just as much heavy lifting as the cut and colour themselves. Styling has gone refreshingly low effort: soft waves, natural texture, a polished ponytail or a sleek low bun make up Adrian’s wish list, and each one is achievable before your second coffee.
“Ultimately, this season is about hair that looks expensive without looking overdone,” he says. “Beautifully cut, beautifully coloured and, most importantly, beautifully healthy.”
Which brings me back to my own in-between hair situation that I still haven’t quite committed to. I’ve booked myself in because if there’s one thing 12 years of loyal Noosa clients will tell you, it’s that an afternoon in Adrian’s chair is equal parts therapy and transformation, usually with a glass of something bubbly in hand, and a spring in your step afterwards.
