Metrics that Matter with Exercise Matters
Think your wearable is telling the whole story? John Caruso discovers why genuine progress, backed by science, sweat and smarts, begins where algorithms end.
It seems everyone these days is obsessed with their numbers. At the coffee shop you’ll catch people scrolling their smartphones and watches for the latest sleep score or step tally. On wrists and fingers, you’ll find a wearable promising to tell you if your heart’s healthy, how fast you recovered, or how good you are for not sitting on the couch all day. Each piece of tech claims to know your deepest health secrets. It’s incredible, kind of overwhelming and a bit disturbing.
I asked Exercise Physiologist Dr Sven Rees from Exercise Matters in Noosaville about this fad and our addiction to wearables.
“They’re useful tools, but there’s no proper validation of what they’re spitting out,” Sven tells me. “Your gadget might be measuring your heart rate or something called your VO2 Max, but you can’t be sure about any of it. It’s like getting a school report card from someone you’ve never met!”
This is where Exercise Matters shines. The team is grounded in real world testing and the kind of results you don’t get from an online dashboard. They specialise in VO2 Max testing – a test that determines your body’s maximum ability to take up, transport and utilise oxygen, and is a key predictor of health and longevity.
“We’re the only place in Noosa with our own VO2 Max machine,” Sven proudly explains. “That means you don’t have to travel for hours or settle for estimates; it’s right here, accurate and tailored to you.”
VO2 Max is a key tool for understanding how fit you really are.
“VO2 Max measures how efficiently your body uses oxygen when you are exercising – using your choice of a treadmill or the Kickr Bike,” Sven says. “It’s the gold standard for measuring cardiorespiratory fitness.”
Want to know if you’re making positive progress over time? Regular VO2 Max testing will tell you.
“This is for everyone, not just elite athletes,” Sven says. “We can all benefit from these insights and use them to inspire change in our lives.”
Not just a powerful marker for today’s fitness, the VO2 Max can accurately predict your long-term health for tomorrow.
“Research consistently shows that VO2 Max is one of the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality: more than cholesterol, BMI or blood pressure,” he says. “This type of testing integrates many systems – cardiac, pulmonary, vascular and muscular – and reflects functional capacity, making it a good indicator of future disease risk.”
Genuine VO2 Max testing, carried out by trained professionals using their in-house machine, drills straight into how your heart, lungs and muscles are truly performing. You’ll walk out with data that’s personalised, accurate and actionable.
I reckon that’s a pretty good reason to pull on a mask and get on the treadmill or bike instead of trusting your watch.
“People are genuinely surprised at how much they learn,” Sven says. “Often, it’s that boost they need to get motivated. It sets a marker, understanding what’s real and where you can push for improvement.”
Anyone who’s interested in their health can benefit from this testing, and Exercise Matters works with a wide range of clients, from young athletes and new mums to retirees and beyond.
“We tailor everything to you, whether you’re regularly active or just curious about your body’s metrics, we can help chart a well-informed path forward,” Sven says.
To gain even deeper insights, you can combine VO2 Max testing with Blood Lactate Analysis, which measures the amount of lactate in the blood to assess cellular energy production.
“When used alongside VO2 Max testing, Blood Lactate Analysis provides a more complete picture of your metabolic efficiency, endurance capacity, and recovery thresholds,” he says. “These insights allow for more precise training zones, improved endurance, and better monitoring of recovery needs – making it an essential tool for athletes and those aiming to optimise their performance.”
Suddenly, exercise isn’t about punishment or guesswork; it’s about progress, with a plan written just for you.
“If you know your base level, you can set achievable goals and see how far you’ve come,” Sven says.
In an era obsessed with digital self-quantification, it’s refreshing to be reminded that real progress comes down to real people, real science, and friendly encouragement.
“We want to cut through the confusion,” Sven says. “Come in, find out where you are, and let our team work together with you to take the next step on your fitness journey.”
MAX LONGEVITY
Research shows that individuals with higher VO2 Max levels tend to live longer, healthier lives with reduced risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. VO2 Max testing is a powerful tool for assessing cardiovascular fitness and overall metabolic health – both key predictors of longevity. By measuring the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise, VO2 Max provides insight into how efficiently your heart, lungs, and muscles work together. Regular VO2 Max testing allows for personalised training strategies to improve fitness, track progress, and support long-term health and vitality.
