Deb Caruso meets the local business owner who has been saving faces of the men and women of Noosa for more than two decades.

Nestled amongst the restaurants and bars in Arcadia Street Noosa Junction is a boutique beauty salon dedicated to making the people of Noosa look and feel good in the skin they are in.

Jenny Wilson has been a beautician at Noosa Body and Skincare for more than twenty years and owner for the past decade after buying the business from her boss.

“The business originated in Tewantin before opening a second salon in Noosa Junction,” Jenny recalls. “Thevre weren’t as many beauty salons in Noosa as there are now so when the opportunity came for me to buy it, I chose to focus just on Noosa Junction, eventually moving here to Arcadia Street.

“It’s the perfect location, accessible and close to everything with great restaurants and bars next door. When we leave at night, the neighbourhood is buzzing and it’s quite tempting to have a drink at Muse before heading home.”

The salon is chic with its iconic European-style awning and French doors leading to reception and a relaxation lounge with three treatment rooms delivering the latest in skin treatments from pampering to problem-solving.

“Every inch of the salon was measured and designed to be functional,” Jenny says. “We have everything we need and each room can deliver every type of treatment that we offer. Each therapist has their own room so they can set it up how they want it.”

Noosa Body and Skincare tailor each treatment to the client’s specific needs and have adapted their offer over time to respond to a changing market.

“The beauty industry has become quite segmented with some services such as waxing and nail bars becoming more mainstream,” Jenny says. “Of all the subjects at TAFE, beauty has almost 40 different streams to learn and that is triple any other subject. It can be quite overwhelming when you first start and not all therapists can be good at everything so we prefer to focus on specialised skin treatments and dropped some services such as massage, tanning and fake nails.”

Client consultation is the highest priority with the additional offer of Face Mapping or a SkinDNA Analysis to fully understand the client’s needs and develop the best treatment plan.

The simple cheek swab analyses 16 core genetic markers that have been shown to play a role in skin protection, premature ageing and determining the future wellbeing of our skin and presenting the results in the categories of Firmness & Elasticity; Wrinkling; Sun Damage & Pigmentation; Free Radical Damage; and Skin Sensitivity.

Jenny said SkinDNA was a game changer for best understanding a client’s problem areas and tailoring the most effective treatment plan.

“We’re passionate about helping clients discover and care for the unique needs of their skin and this allows us to better understand what ingredients to use and any internal supplements to recommend. It provides a great base to work from – knowing is glowing!”

While they offer manicures, pedicures and waxing, treating skin is the top priority with the salon recently recording over 500 microdermabrasions for 2023.

“For skin treatments we do a lot of peels and microdermabrasions which really help to create even skin tones as well as provide a really deep clean to reveal glowing skin,” Jenny says. “Microdermabrasion buffs away the outermost layer of the skin to create a smoother and younger appearance and is good for drainage of the lymph nodes, stimulating collagen synthesis and turning over skin cells quicker to prevent lines and wrinkles.

“As you age this is more important as in your 20-30s, renewal rates for skin is about every 25-28 days but when you hit 50, it’s about 48 days.

“Microdermabrasion is minimally invasive and gentle enough that monthly maintenance is recommended.”

Noosa Body & Skincare have three different machines for delivering microdermabrasion depending on the client’s needs. Similarly, they have a range of Peels which are another popular way to help with skin renewal.

“Most of our peels don’t noticably peel your skin off, you just turn over cells and take a bit extra off when you cleanse so there’s not a lot of downtime needed to reveal glowing skin,” Jenny says.

With a commitment to team training every week for two hours to ensure consistency in technique and consultations, it’s no surprise that Jenny’s team have loyal customers – some that have been seeing Jenny for more than twenty years!

“I have one client who came to me in her sixties and she is now 83 and her skin looks amazing,” Jenny says. “I’ve seen the test of time and what works.”

When it comes to products, Jenny swears by Dermalogica, which also has a  dedicated training program led by dermal therapists which Jenny reached Expert Level in years ago.

The salon also stocks one of the largest ranges of Pure Fiji that I have ever seen and uses Byron Bay’s Sienna Nail Polish which is toxic-free with recyclable hand-carved wooden caps..

Jenny’s best advice for healthy, glowing skin is to cleanse properly and she recommends using Dermalogica’s Precleanse oil to “dissolve the day” and melt make-up and impurities from skin before cleansing. Best of all, Noosa Body & Skincare offer 20% off all Dermalogica products.

“Cleansing is the number one and most important step,” Jenny says. “If you don’t get that right, nothing else matters.”
