The Art of Rum with Nil Desperandum

Art is usually appreciated on the wall, but this summer it can be discovered in your glass thanks to the new ‘Artfully Corrupted’ range of rums from Australia’s first organic rum producer, Nil Desperandum, discovers Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer.

Let us paint you a picture: Australia’s finest rum distiller; two renowned artists; a bunch of delicious and unexpected ingredients.

The brand-new Artfully Corrupted range of rums is the latest masterpiece from CAVU, the creators of Australia’s first organic rum, Nil Desperandum, distilled right here on the Sunshine Coast.

Launching just in time to become our favourite sip for summer, the creative range offers three innovative takes on their classic offering, Nil Desperandum – Certified Organic rum that’s made from wild fermented molasses and is aged for a minimum of two years in bourbon barrels, in the style of the most exceptional Caribbean rums.

SPICED is imbued with an enticing aromatic blend of vanilla bean, Jamaican pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, fennel seed, clove, nutmeg and tea, with floral and earthy flavours and a rich molasses backbone – perfect as part of a Spiced Rum cocktail, or served straight over ice with a squeeze
of lime!

ORANGE features a delicious and zesty blend of orchard-fresh orange peel, premium dark chocolate, rum soaked raisins, and aromatic spices, and can be served in a Spiced Rum Old Fashioned or paired with Fever-Tree Cola and a wheel of orange for a refreshingly citrusy summer sip.

BLACK is spiced with a blend of Segafredo Zanetti cold brewed coffee, twice roasted Nutworks Sunshine Coast grown macadamias and aromatic spices, resulting in rich intense flavours of coffee molasses, Australian bush touches of wattleseed, and creamy mocha vanilla-bean edges. Serve neat over ice, with coffee, or in a Rum Espresso Martini with Sunshine & Sons Original Vodka, espresso coffee and vanilla syrup – it’s up to brew!

As well as offering rum enthusiasts three exciting new flavours, the Artfully Corrupted range supports artists and local talent, with the brand commissioning two of their favourite creatives to dream up artwork for the labels.

Talented local Noosa artist Mackenzie Clark has brought the vision for the SPICED and BLACK to life with her bold, emotive pieces featuring arresting subjects and abstract backgrounds.

And continuing the brand’s active support for Ukraine, ORANGE features the work of the incredible Viktoriia Kartashova – a Kyiv-based figurative artist creating expressive psychological portraits and other large-scale pieces.

“The purpose of art is to inspire us, challenge us and make us think – and what better way to think than with a glass of rum in your hand,” says Brand Manager Jack O’Neill. “We’re thrilled to be collaborating with these two talented artists for our Artfully Corrupted range.

“There’s only one way we would ever contemplate corrupting Australia’s finest rum, and that’s artfully!”

Cheers to that!
