Worth RA-ving About: Ra Restaurant
Deb Caruso discovers flavours that impress from the shores from Sri Lanka to Sunshine Beach.
Ra Restaurant brings the flavours and soul of Sri Lanka to Sunshine Beach, under the passionate guidance of Sri Lankan-born Vino Illesinghe.
Driven by the search for genuine flavours from her birthplace and an instinct to share her family’s legacy, Vino has created a destination for guests to experience the cuisine and culture of Sri Lanka in each plate.
Step inside and you’ll sense Vino’s personal touch in the décor – antique Sri Lankan timber panelling and elements, the space radiates comfort with long bench seating, a booth for groups and tables that sit amongst the trees and catch the breezes from the nearby ocean.
Vino has gone to great lengths to bring the island’s spirit to Sunshine Beach – tracking down local growers for the freshest produce, building relationships with farmers and growing essential, hard-to-find Sri Lankan ingredients at home, including aromatic curry leaves.
Where tropical ingredients can’t be grown locally, think jackfruit and tamarind, the team sources the very best suppliers, marrying authenticity with freshness and fusing Sri Lankan roots with the Sunshine Coast’s bounty.
Everything on the menu, from punchy curries to slow-cooked coconut stews, is dialled up on both freshness and flavour.
Ra’s kitchen crew stands out for their true Sri Lankan heritage and Vino is proud of her team, not just for their skills, but for their sense of purpose.
You’ll spot team members waving from the pass, ready for a chat, happy to explain a spice or swap a family story.
Vino is quick to highlight the collective spirit behind the scenes.
“They’re not working at Ra, they’re delivering on our dream,” she says.
The menu at Ra is a love letter to the island’s iconic cuisine. Sri Lankan spices including curry leaf, cardamom, cloves, and Ceylon cinnamon prized for its warmth and sweetness; are joined by coconut, lime, and aromatic herbs.
The ever-evolving menu is shaped by tradition and what’s seasonally available, making every visit a new experience.
Ra stands apart by being fresh and flexible, never heavy. Here, spice is about flavour, not heat, unless you ask for it.
Start with Hot Butter King Prawns or Vino’s Special Sri Lankan Vada, a moreish deep-fried lentil snack. Ceylon Fish or Jackfruit Cutlets offer something new; or stroll down Curry Street where you’ll find deeply flavoured choices such as Black Pork Curry, Home-style Beef or Ceylon Chicken. Choose your favourite curry to add to the famed Negombo Special Kottu, a hearty stir-fry of shredded roti, vegetables, and spices.
Don’t miss the pan-fried barramundi, basted in lemon, butter, and fried curry leaves atop a roasted red pepper sauce – the sort of dish that sticks in the memory long after it’s gone.
Crispy papadums add crunch and depth; house-made roti is essential for mopping up sauces; and salads are bright and keep things light. Everyone is catered for with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options.
Save room for desserts including a crème brûlée infusing cinnamon with a golden palm sugar crust and berries bringing island flavours to a French classic; the timeless Sri Lankan Watalappan – a creamy coconut and jaggery pudding with cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and pandan, and finished with coconut ice cream.
The cocktail list is where Sri Lankan flair meets Sunshine Coast spirit in blends like the Curry Leaf Mojito, which swaps mint for aromatic curry leaves, muddled with homemade syrup and local spirits. Other standouts include the Kasippu, a passionfruit and mango gin concoction; and the bright blue Sri Lankan Blue Lagoon – the perfect sidekick to an afternoon in the surf.
Local beer and a spritz on tap, such as a grapefruit gin fizz, lines up perfectly with the kitchen’s punchy dishes. For non-drinkers, the ‘Non’ range offers ceremony and flavour – try the Toasted Cinnamon and Yuzu.
Vino’s evolving celebration of Sri Lankan flavours and Sunshine Beach’s laid-back lifestyle means every visit offers heartfelt food, drinks and hospitality that honours culture and connection. Simple things done right – Sri Lankan food at home on the Sunshine Coast, just as Vino envisioned.
