You Do Yuzu with Sunshine & Sons
Has Sunshine & Sons got something for Yu-zu? Tony Cox nestles into Sunshine & Sons’ new Barrel Room to find out more.
As I always say, you could never accuse the team at Sunshine & Sons Premium Spirits of standing still and resting on their laurels. They are constantly searching for new ways to tantalise our tastebuds and present the drinking public with something new.
The latest Sunshine & Sons Limited Edition gin is their Yuzu Gin, a collaboration with a citrus grower in the Mary Valley who is pioneering the growing of yuzu to supply to the south-east Queensland market.
Yuzu is a citrus plant and is most common in Japan. It is very floral and perfumed and has a tartness closest in flavour to lemon but with a sweet citrus edge as well, with overtones akin to mandarin. Given gin marries well with virtually any fruit in the citrus family it is the ideal botanical to utilise in the distillation of gin.
Well-suited to the classic gin-based cocktails, especially in a Yuzu Martini, Sunshine & Sons Yuzu Gin is also ideal as the base for a refreshing long drink, whether tonic or soda be your preferred mixer, complete with a thin slice of lemon as garnish. It sounds like the perfect way to kick back at the distillery door in winter, where the north-facing outdoor area allows you to soak up the winter sunshine with the distillery building sheltering you from the southerly winds!
Should the weather be on the inclement side, inside the distillery has been rearranged to create an all-weather alternative that also acts as an event space for private hire of up to 120 guests for cocktail events.
Who says you can’t organise a knees-up in a distillery?
Prove them wrong and email gday@sunshineandsons.com.au or ask at the distillery door for further information.
For lovers of the darker and matured side of spirits the crew have released another exceptional single cask Nil Desperandum Rum from their The 1871 Club range. The Mezcal barrel rum is aged for four years in barrels previously filled with mezcal, it is still undeniably a rum but with the smokey, earthy and vegetal attributes present that comes from mezcal. And right on trend given the huge interest in tequila and mezcal from Australian drinkers. Try sipping this one neat to savour the complexity.
The team have done it again – a new and exciting gin, utilising locally grown produce in the distillation process; and a new rum which marries the usual flavours, aromas and textures of rum with the delicious smokey and earthy notes of barrels previously filled with mezcal.
Beat the well-worn path to their distillery door, sit in the sun and enjoy the tranquility of the neighbouring rainforest, sip your preferred beverage listening to the sounds of birdsong as the backdrop.
Open 7 days from 10am.
Right in the heart of the Sunshine Coast. That’s the spirit!
